BET Awards 2013 Superlatives
BET brought Black Music Month to a close last night with the 2013 BET Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The 106th & Park red carpet gave us plenty of buzzworthy moments including Ace Hood’s watch falling apart and Nia Long’s awkward exchange with Kendrick Lamar but here are the most noteworthy looks from last night:
Let’s just call this the “Nicki Minaj award for style” since there’s no competition. Host Adrienne Bailon’s one-shoulder, thigh-high slit red gown paired with a chic braided bun updo, minimalist makeup and detailed accessories set the bar for how award show attendees should look.
Best Actor Recipient Jamie Foxx has always been outspoken about his support for Trayvon Martin and chose his appearance on the red carpet to say it with his chest.
I live for wearing white in warmer weather – and apparently I’m not the only one. Host Chris Tucker, man of the night Kendrick Lamar, and reality starlets Kenya Moore and Omarosa stepped out in white-on-white ensembles.
Most attendees were dressed casually this year, but Jordin Sparks takes the cake. The singer/actress looks like she’s headed to brunch. Note to Jordan – when you get dressed for an award show, your outfit shouldn’t look like you can casually head to a cookout afterwards.
As a host, you never want to look bad, so it’s best to play it safe with a simple understated dress. 106 & Park host Angela Simmons did not get that memo. Sure, she’s on trend with white but there is so much going on all over every inch of this dress that instead of clean, classic white it looks like pure trash.
It’s definitely wise to consider where you’re going, and what you’ll be doing once you get there when getting dressed. That said, Meagan Good definitely made a bold choice to wear a breast baring deep v-neck and dangerously high slit knowing she was presenting a gospel award.
In some circles, Gabby Douglas is remembered just as much for her athletic abilities in the 2012 Summer Olympics as her hair choices. As the Subway Sportswoman of the Year and Youngstars Award recipient, Gabby clearly made a conscious decision to pick a gown and hairstyle that work in her favor. And that bold red lip? She sure showed ASAP Rocky!
No, you’re not seeing double. Rapper J. Cole and DJ Drama did show up in the same shirt, styled the exact same way except J. Cole accessorized his look with a gold chain while Drama chose a fitted hat to amp up his look. Someone’s stylist is in BIG trouble today.
