DIY Nails Inspired by Mardi Gras
Since I’m dedicating 2014 to DIY projects, I decided to paint my own nails while I watched the Oscars. In the spirit of Carnival/Lent season, I went with a green, purple and gold – ok yellow – Mardi Gras themed design. Turns out trying to do your own nail art can be just as challenging as it is fun!
After my base coat I started off with two layers of “Misti” by Julep on each finger. To start the design on my accent nail, I made two little purple triangles using L’Oreal’s “Paparazzi Pleaser” – then came the challenge. I wanted a small yellow arrow to separate the purple and green parts of the nail, but making a small straight line isn’t as easy as it sounds.
Doing my left hand was a bit easier than I thought it’d be. The purple smudges a bit but layering on the yellow arrow cleans the look up. My dominant hand however was another story.
I managed to get the green on fine but the purple was more difficult. If I wasn’t applying too much I was applying too little and when it came time to do that yellow line? FUHGEDDABOUTIT! It took five failed attempts trying to use a manicure stick on my “Sunny Disposition” by Pure Nails when I finally gave up and took the brush from my French tip polish to make the arrow. Using a thin brush makes creating small lines much easier!
