Harlem Haberdashery Taught Me: What to Wear to a Kentucky Derby Party!
As a native North Easterner I knew nothing about the Kentucky Derby, but as a fashionista I’ll take any excuse to don a cute outfit and drink while the sun is still out! I’ve only ever been to one horse race so when I was invited to Harlem Haberdashery boutique for a derby party I was still a little confused about what to wear. Luckily the whole crowd was dressed to the nines with great examples!
The Harlem Haberdashery crew take their derby fashion very seriously and rightfully so – the Lenox Ave boutique is run by a tight knit group of style veterans and fashionable family. If you need a little inspiration before heading to a Kentucky Derby party here are a few ideas based on the fly looks I spotted in Harlem!
Color is key!
New Yorkers love black and other “practical” hues but this happy occasion calls for vibrant colors! Mix and match pastels to your hearts desire! For a minimalist look, trade your LBD for a white version and add touch of color with an accessory.
Prints are better
Fellas, pull out every floral and plaid pattern you can find – it’s never more appropriate than at the derby! Be sure to tailor your patterned suit and don’t forget details like pocket squares! Can’t commit to a suit? Rock printed pants with a simple top.
It’s all about the hat!
There will always be time for prints and pastels but how often can you wear a funky hat? Men can stick to fedoras but ladies should take a risk with a funky fascinator!
Harlem Haberdashery hosts a Kentucky Derby party annually as part of their anniversary celebration. It’s a warm vibe with signature drinks and Harlem’s best dressed crowd. Check it out if you ever get the chance!
