Word on the internet this morning was that Eva Chen might be out at Lucky Magazine. Just two hours after the rumors were spread, Eva confirmed her departure via 2015’s most reliable source – Twitter.

Chen took the position as editor-in-chief  over a year ago and the magazine has undergone a lot of changes during her tenure. After deciding to shift efforts from print to digital, the magazine group launched its successful edit-based e-commerce venture  with BeachMint. Though ad sales were down for the print edition they continued to have an impact on the fashion world. Their February issue was the first magazine to feature popular bloggers  Chiara Ferragni of The Blonde Salad, Nicole Warne of Gary Pepper Girl and Zanita Whittington of Zanita.

Under Chen, Lucky’s first Asian-American Editor-in-Chief, the brand also seemed to make a bigger attempt to embrace diversity. Of the 18 print magazines released since she took over, five have included Black/Latina celebrities on their covers such as Solange Knowles, Zoe Saldana, the controversial Kerry Washington cover,  last month’s Lupita Nyong’o and on next month’s issue – Joan Smalls. Though Nicole Warne might be the only Asian-American to grace a cover did anyone else notice the increased presence of Asian-American bloggers, models and designers embraced by Lucky over the past months?

So why is Eva leaving? The magazine laid off several employees last month which Lucky President Gillian Gorman Round referred to as “readjusting on the editorial side” but they did not express that Chen’s departure is part of this round up. In a series of 8 tweets Chen stated that it was “an intensely personal/difficult decision” and that  she would maintain a professional life that allowed her to devote more time to family.
