Justin Timberlake faces off against Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for most Moonmen
Looks like Justin Timberlake is not only sharing a stage with rappers this summer – he’ll spend the next few weeks battling it out with hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis for the most VMAs. With six nominations each, Justin Timberlake stands to nearly double his VMAs, while Macklemore & Ryan Lewis would gain their first Moonmen.
The top nominees won’t just be facing off for the most awards – they’re competing against each other in three categories. Timberlake’s “Mirrors” is up for “Video of the Year” and “Best Editing” against Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us” respectively. “Can’t Hold Us”, featuring Ray Dalton, faces off against Timberlake and Jay-Z’s “Suit & Tie” for the “Best Direction” award.
“Suit and Tie” , Timberlake’s single with Legends of the Summer tourmate Jay-Z is also up for “Best Collaboration”, competing with the more controversial rapper/blue-eyed soul collab “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke, TI, and Pharrell. The two videos square off twice more for “Best Male Video” as well as “Video of the Year”. For his sixth nomination, JT’s “Mirrors” faces off against another controversial video, Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop”. Cyrus has a total of three nominations including “Best Female Video” and “Best Pop Video”.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us” is up for “Best Cinematography” and “Best Hip-Hop Video”. Their lesser known video “Same Love” rounds out their nominations with a nod for ” Best Video with a Social Message”.
What other artists are going for multiple moonmen? Pink and 30 Seconds to Mars are up for three total awards while Taylor Swift, Fun, Drake and Calvin Harris have two nominations each.
