Met Gala 2014: 12 Looks We Need to Discuss

There were so many interesting looks at last night’s Met Ball honoring Charles James, but here are 12 that need to be discussed.

Met-Gala-2014-Rihanna-Stella-McCartney-Front-and-BackRihanna rarely gets it wrong and this year’s Met Gala was no exception. As if the two-piece by Stella McCartney wasn’t sexy enough, the crop top came with an exposed back. A tousled up-do worked perfectly to complement the look. My only issue? Her exposed tattoo at her right underboob.

Met-Gala-Kim-Kardashian-Kanye-WestSpeaking of moms who clean up nicely Kim Kardashian has done a complete 180 from last year’s Met Gala look. The bombshell arrived in a blue and black Lanvin gown and her equally fashion-obsessed fiancée on her arm. While Kim’s waves and minimalist makeup work well with the gown she should have invested more time in picking the right shoe. It looks like she found the shoes from her eighth grade  prom and decided they were making a comeback. Ankle straps would’ve been a better option.

I’ll feel better about Chrissy Teigen‘s look if she soon reveals she’s pregnant. Everything about this look is otherwise flawless but her lack of Spanx is the first thing I notice in these photos.

Between her fishtail braid, deep berry polish and golden shoes I could forgive how Joan Smalls‘ dress becomes sheer at an awkward spot but that lip color? No. A deep purple is a good idea but this isn’t the right lip shade. Maybe something a little less vampy but tilting towards flesh tone?

I’m always on the fence when Beyonce takes risks and this Givenchy ensemble is no different. It appears as though Beyonce is promoting her album by sporting some of the looks from her videos in public – remember this fishnet headdress from the ‘Partition’ video?

So Rosie Huntington-Whiteley dressed for last year’s “punk” theme but she looks good so we can forgive her right?

Frank Ocean did well copying Jay Z’s look, but he should’ve adopted the rapper’s swag as well. Frank’s Givenchy suit fits nicely but he doesn’t have the confidence to do this look justice.

Zoe Saldana can usually pull of anything, but this Michael Kors number just doesn’t do it. Her plunging line is super sexy and even works well with the print at the bottom but that volume? There’s just too much going on.

Most improved definitely goes to Lena Dunham for the night. Usually the Girls star and creator is wearing something cut for a different body type or matching her teeth to her dress but this look actually gets it right. My only advice would be to team up with Frank Ocean and find a confidence coach. She’s clearly still uncomfortable on the red carpet

Solange looks amazing in 3.1 Phillip Lim, my only problem with this look is the hair. Sure it complements her dress but it ages her by decades. That haircut and plain face makes her look more like Beyonce’s aunty than her kid sister.

Let’s have a round of applause for Katie Holmes. She got kidnapped, beat up, dragged through the bushes and still managed to make it to the gala on time. A wrinkled Marchesa gown with puffy sleeves that fall off the shoulder don’t do anything for the actress, and her undone hair look isn’t helping.

Lupita N’yongo has slayed red carpet after red carpet this past awards season, so it was only a matter of time before the Lancome spokesperson messed up right? Her Prada dress seemed to be inspired by Peter Pan and  flappers at the same damn time. What’s with the oddly placed headband? Guess she can’t win them all huh?
