Let’s discuss these Met Gala 2016 looks…
This year’s Met Gala theme honored the upcoming Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology.
According to Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, the distinction between haute couture and machine-made fashion, “has become increasingly blurred as both disciplines have embraced the practices and techniques of the other.” Charged with wearing a look that encompasses both approaches to fashion many celebrs leaned on silver gowns or details and referred to fashion houses known for their intricate designs such as Balmain.
Let’s take a look at how some of our favorite stars interpreted this year’s Met Gala theme:
Balmain was a no-brainer for the Kardashian-West’s since Olivier Rousteing loves this family and his work is on trend with this year’s theme. Kim’s gown showcases the hand embroidery Rousteing adores but Kanye’s look is a bit more complex. First of all, who wears jeans, no RIPPED jeans, and suede boots to the Met Gala? That’s disrespectful! His bedazzled jacket seems like something Cam’ron and Kimora Lee Simmons could have had people wearing in the early 2000s. And what’s with the contacts? I get that he’s going for an android vibe, but it’s a lot more creepy than couture.
Florence Welch is killing it in Gucci but are we shocked? Florence is great at avant-garde fashion and her red carpet looks are always in another dimension so it only makes sense she’d nail it at the Met Gala!
Aja Naomi King looks really cute for a rooftop day party, but who manages to get an invite to the Met Gala and put such little effort into their ensemble?
I predicted Nicki Minaj would show up in black with touches of silver and normal hair, which is not what I wanted from her. While I accept her transition to normal every day looks, the Met Gala isn’t the place to wear something you could also wear to the American Music Awards. It’s the opportunity to showcase the over the top fashion we know she’s capable of. I don’t love this look and I can tell she doesn’t either by the way she carries herself. I wish Nicki would have played with texture more and applied some effort.
It looks like Solange did a better job of incorporating the theme into this year’s look. Her yellow David LaPort number vaguely reminds me of last year’s design but she’s incorporated latex to bring in the machina element of this year’s exhibit. Well done Solo!
Karolina Kurkova killed it in Marchesa! You can’t tell by looking at the photos but her dress is linked to her social media. Any mentions to any of her accounts would cause the dress to light up. Talk about fashion in the age of technology!
Here’s Amy Schumer in Alexander Wang looking sloppy as usual. I’m a huge fan of the off the shoulder trend for Spring 2016 but Amy doesn’t look intentional with it, she looks like a child forced into a dress to go somewhere she doesn’t want to be, or like she just got it on in the limo and couldn’t be bothered to take a look in the mirror before presenting herself to the world.
Is Jennifer Hudson having her surprise wedding at the Met Gala? What is with this bridal H&M gown? If you’re going to forgo the theme you should at least look great but this cut does nothing for her. This bodice looks frumpy and alters her shape as though she’s gained back about 25 lbs. She could have – and should have – done much better.
Selena Gomez looks like those throwback pictures you post from the 90s to show how bad fashion was back then. Why is her stylist mad at her? I get the manus (polka dot dress) vs. machina (leather top) but certainly there was a way to incorporate both styles without looking so clueless.
It took me a while to get Beyonce’s look but after sleeping on it I realized she wasn’t just going for a new version of last year’s dress but really did capture the theme. The latex represents the machina while the beading represents manus. Bey’s Met Gala looks are often either missing the mark or missing the theme but this year she managed to nail both!
Claire Danes clearly – pun intended! – won the night in Zac Posen! Her Cinderella-inspired dress is gorgeous under the light but takes things a step further by glowing in the dark!
