Oscars 2016: Best (and Worst) Dressed
Last night the 88th Annual Academy Awards wrapped up what’s been a generally lackluster awards season as far as the red carpets go. Maybe it was the absence of our regular best dressed actresses like Lupita Nyong’o and Zoe Saldana, but this year’s starlets left me wanting more.
Despite the general blah looks there were still a few that stood out – for better and for worse. Check below for my favorite, and least favorite looks of the night!
Remember that duct tape prom dress scholarship everyone was afraid to apply to? Looks like Lily Cole is still trying to win it. I’m not sure why Vivenne Westwood would dress her like this but if Lilly doesn’t care I guess I shouldn’t either right?
Emily Blunt is pregnant in Prada and while she looks adorable she also looks like she could be in Ariana Grande’s squad at the 8th grade prom.
Heidi Klum likes to try it. I’ll probably never fully understand what this dress is about but it looks as though the mice from Cinderella took her daughter’s window curtains and threw together something in time for Heidi to make it to the ball.
I now see why Sofia Vergara sticks to the same silhouette on the red carpet – it’s the one that works best. This deep blue Marchesa gown isn’t ugly, but it isn’t notable either.
It took me a while to reach a decision about Kerry Washington’s look but I’ve settled on not liking it. This Atelier Versace gown feels like the type of design that would get the third or fourth contestant kicked off Project Runway. The mixed materials are awkward, the leather top is too high up and perhaps it’s simply the juxtaposition of the two different materials but the white bottom looks cheap. The only part of Kerry’s look I love is her hair and earrings. Keep that, trash the rest!
Cate Blanchet’s Armani Prive gown is WAY too 3D for my liking. Maybe had the flowers been only at the shoulders only this could be cute but stringing them all over the dress makes this look downright ugly. And what’s with the color? It does nothing to flatter her skin or hair. This was an all around fail.
This dark Dior gown is a good look for Jennifer Lawrence! We often see her in red or white but I like that she’s playing with textures, patterns and layers on this black dress rather than allowing the color to speak for her look. And that lob, yaas honey!
Chrissy Teigen is the best at looking fly while pregnant! I love that this Marchesa gown works around the baby bump without making it the focal point.
Olivia Munn always gets it right because she picks bold colors that flatter her like this orange Stella McCartney dress. The demi cape on the cropped top gives the look subtle flavor and her simple bracelets and a low bun with a middle part and the perfect understated accents!
Tina Fey defies the idea that comediennes can’t be both funny and hot in this purple Atelier Versace gown. A simple royal hue that flatters her skin tone plus a cut that flatters her body shape and a clean updo that allows her understated necklace to accent the dress is a recipe for a successful red carpet look. I love that Tina never wears anything avant garde or truly risky but still always manages to look amazing!
I don’t even know what to say about Priyanka Chopra in Zuhair Murad except that she looks amazing and is easily the best dressed woman of the night! Priyanka combined all the elements of what makes a best dressed candidate – wear a color and cut that flatters you, carefully choose between texture OR jewelry and select hair and makeup that doesn’t distract from the gown. I know she’s got her plate full in Bollywood but I’m hoping she’ll make more appearances on Hollywood’s red carpet.
